Our History

INTRODUCTION OF US
About W.C. Atkinson

The first black doctor to open a medical practice in Coatesville, P.A. in 1927

Our Mission

To enhance neighborhood revitalization by providing community resources, referrals and housing for lower income families and homeless men residing in the greater Coatesville area; and to promote a healthy lifestyle through shelter services, prevention, support, and cultural services.

Our commitment to community service

Shelter Services

Since 1992, the WC Atkinson Men’s Shelter (The Shelter) has provided a safe and nurturing environment for over 6,000 men. The Shelter serves vulnerable homeless and chronically homeless men that are referred to us through the United Way 211 Service.

Shelter Dormitory

Residents must have mobility to navigate the shelter, sleep on a twin sized bed and be able to leave the shelter each morning by 7:00 a.m. and return not before 5:00 p.m. Exceptions were made during the COVID-19 Pandemic, when we transitioned to a 24/7 shelter to accommodate social distancing and stay-at-home mandates.

Supportive Permanent Housing

Our Supportive Permanent Housing program currently consists of five homes, with three men residing in each house. These homes provide a supportive environment where case management is available to assist the residents. Men are selected for this program from the shelter based on their willingness to adhere to the program’s guidelines and requirements.

Upcoming Supportive Permanent Housing

Our Supportive Permanent Housing program will expand from five to eight homes in the coming year. We have recently purchased two of three additional homes, one of which has been fully renovated.
